Interior Nebulae is a collection of 40 illustrated works exploring inner landscapes, memory, transformation and the worlds we carry within us.
This series of digital illustrations that begins with memory. Each work starts with a remembered image, feeling or moment, which I reconstruct using photographs drawn from my own archive.
These photographic elements are combined digitally to create a new image that does not document a particular event, but instead attempts to recreate something of the way it is remembered. I then use this constructed image as the basis for an illustration, redrawing and transforming in Procreate.
The figures that emerge inhabit imagined spaces shaped by my ongoing interest in feminine mythology, storytelling and contemporary visual culture. References to archetypal and mythological figures sit alongside influences drawn from fashion photography, portraiture and popular imagery.
Through the process of drawing, the photographic source gradually becomes simplified and less literal. Colour, gesture, pattern and flattened forms replace photographic detail, moving the image further away from its original source and towards something more symbolic.
I am interested in what happens during this translation: from lived experience to memory, from memory to photograph, and from photograph to drawing. The resulting images occupy a space somewhere between autobiography and fiction, where personal memories can become characters, myths and imagined worlds.
Each of the 40 works is available individually as a print or canvas wall work, in a range of sizes and frame colourways. Or experience the collection as a whole with the Interior Nebulae Poetics Card Deck: all 40 images gathered into a single collectible set.
