Brooklyn Bags began while I was visiting New York, where I became increasingly aware of the visibility of waste within the urban landscape. Bags of rubbish accumulated on footpaths and against buildings, becoming temporary forms within the streetscape.
I began photographing these discarded bags, paying attention to their shapes, surfaces and the way they occupied public space. Removed from their everyday function through the act of photographing them, they began to resemble objects, bodies and sculptural forms.
The series became a precursor to Body Bags / I Am a Trash Bag, where this initial observation of waste developed into a more performative exploration of the relationship between the body, consumption and what we discard.
Thank you!
